Global Education: Views from Both Sides of the Pond

The push to internationalize US curriculum and to instill a sense of global competency in students requires a rethinking of teaching. Not only is content important, but context as well; how do we understand better a diversity of cultural perspectives, teaching pedagogy, and student learning? This session reviews the experiences of a set of Fulbright Scholars from around the US teaching in Ireland and Irish faculty who taught in the US. Learn what surprised them in their new classrooms, what similarities there are with faculty work in both countries, and the different challenges each group faces with their students. Take away tips on how to internationalize your teaching.


Biography


Pamela Eddy is an Associate Professor of Higher Education in the department of Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership at The College of William and Mary in Virginia. Dr. Eddy co-authored Creating the Future of Faculty Development: Learning from the Past, Understanding the Present. She was selected as the Emerging Scholar for the Council for the Study of Community Colleges in 2006 and received the Central Michigan University 2007 Provost Award in recognition for her research and scholarly publications. She has published 20 articles, 10 book chapters, and two edited journals on topics of leadership, organizational change, and faculty work. Eddy has given over 50 presentations and workshops on these topics.
Dr. Eddy was recognized for her teaching and received the 2008 Central Michigan University Teaching Excellence Award. She has chaired 22 dissertations and served on 10 additional committees. Three of her students have received the Central Michigan University Dissertation of the Year Award.
            In 2009, Dr. Eddy received a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research in Ireland. She researched partnership efforts among post-secondary institutions in light of recent higher education reform efforts in that country that encouraged collaborations and alignment of the higher education sector. She investigated how faculty work was impacted by institutional collaborations and the push for global competency. Dr. Eddy received her Ph.D. in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education at Michigan State University. She serves as a consultant on organizational change and faculty work.
